Find your footing in Nim

Take a moment with Nim before moving to another game. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Take a closer look while playing

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Notice the feedback after each input.

The goal to keep in mind

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Start with a deliberate move.

The playing sequence

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

How to use the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use one clear input at a time.

An example before you play

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Check this before moving on

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
