How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

Start Tic-Tac-Toe by looking at the playing area and its controls. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

An idea for your next attempt

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Notice the feedback after each input.

The challenge in front of you

Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The steps to play

  1. Player 1 places a cross in an empty cell.
  2. Player 2 places a circle in another empty cell.
  3. Take turns, watching both your winning opportunities and the opponent’s threats.
  4. The board stops accepting moves when a player wins or the game is drawn.

The controls to know

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

Work through an example

Two crosses in the top row threaten a win in the remaining top-row cell. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Keep this in mind

You cannot replace a mark that is already on the board. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
